Family Fun Fridays

Welcome to Family Fun Fridays! These day workshops are for curious children and their inquisitive guardians (Guardians must attend program with children). Kids will discover the unique marine habitats of the Eastern Shore and the interesting creatures that live in them. Classes include hands-on activities, games, fieldwork and active observation of Marine Animals! Children will gain an understanding and appreciation of the natural world around them. Programs geared toward children age 7 and up unless otherwise stated.

Fintastic Fish Workshop (ages 7 yrs and up)

There’s nothing fishy about this great opportunity! Ever wondered exactly how fish affect their ecosystems and how ecosystems impact fish? Or how people and fish influence each other? During this workshop, participants will try to answer these questions as they discover the world of fish through hands on activities like seining and sieving for organisms in tidal creeks, and more!

Time: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Cost: $15 per person (cost includes instruction, snacks, transportation to field site and equipment)

Marsh Mysteries Workshop (ages 7 yrs and up)

Spend the morning in one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet! During this class participants will visit the salt marsh in the restricted Wallops Island, VA. Participants will observe the wildlife that call the marsh home, learn about food webs, marsh formation and tidal zonation. During this workshop participants will have the opportunity to do a “productivity plunge” where they will get to experience the marsh (and mud!) in true full immersion style.

Time: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Cost: $15 per person

Incredible Inverts Workshop (ages 7 yrs and up)

Attention Vertebrates! A stunning 97% of the world's organisms lack a backbone! If you are interested in spineless marine creatures, such as whelks, urchins and blue crabs then this program is perfect for you. Participants will learn about the remarkable life, behavior, and anatomy of the main phyla of invertebrates. We place special emphasis on coastal Atlantic marine species.

Time: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Cost: $15 per person

Nature Journaling for Kids (ages 7 yrs and up)

Kids will learn the techniques of keeping a Nature Journal. Each kid will create their own nature journal to use during the workshop. We will go on a nature walk and look for animals and plants. We will use our 5 senses to observe natural environments. We will make a record of our observations through drawing and writing exercises. The focus of this nature journaling workshop is to relax, enjoy the moment and have fun with natural subjects. No previous art experience necessary!

Time: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Cost: $15 /child (cost includes instruction, all materials and a Snack)
