Junior Marine Biologists - ages 13 - 15
If you are looking for a real field science experience......
Marine Biology
June 27 - July 3
Do you have an interest in fishes and marine mammals, their prey, and their habitat? This course is designed for the individual who is interested in all the aspects of the marine environment. Participants use a variety of sampling and collecting techniques to explore diverse habitats on the shores of Virginia's barrier island community. A boat trip through the tidal creeks of the salt marsh, and collections from intertidal areas, will supply organisms for identification and study in the laboratory. Each participant will prepare his or her own catalog of local organisms to take home.
Top Ocean Predators
June 27 - July 3
Osprey and dolphin and sharks, oh my! Each day of this program will focus on a different group of ocean predators, including marine mammals, sharks, fishes, birds and reptiles. Participants will explore who is eating whom in the marine food web and determine what it takes to survive the jaws and talons of some of nature's most finely tuned hunters. A trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore will provide an opportunity to collect behavioral observations on select predators. Other field activities will include data collections and observation of local top predators from a research vessel.
Fintastic Fish
2010 Costs: $575/ camp
(includes instruction, meals, lodging, research cruises, and materials)
July 11 - 17
This program is for the Jr. Marine Biologist who has a particular interest in the watery world of fishes. Study fish behaviors, compare fresh- and salt-water fishes, and examine the array of adaptations found in coastal Atlantic fishes. Field activities will include constructing your own fish catalog of the species we collect along the shore and from the deck of the research vessel. In addition you will prepare a fish skeleton to take home.
Kayaking Adventures in Nature
July 18 - 24
Paddle through areas only accessible by kayak, including salt marshes, secluded beaches and more during this week long adventure in environmental interpretation. By observation and interpretation we will learn from the trends of environmental naturalists such as Rachel Carson and John Muir whose memoirs changed the way we look at nature forever. We will keep our own field journals, using guides to identify plants and animals in the field and learn about the natural world around us. Proper paddling instruction and nautical skills will be covered and practiced so that beginners and experienced paddlers alike are welcome to join us for this week on the water!

Dangerous Creatures
July 18 - 24
Discover the wondrous variety of animals that are both beautiful and dangerous. Whether its the gooey jellyfish stranded on the beach, the poisonous spines of the local oyster toadfish, or even the shredding power of a shark's jaw, menacing marine "monsters" fascinate us all. But do you know the true story of the giant squid? Join our Dangerous Creatures Mythbusters team and work to dispel many of the myths of ocean creatures. Threatening local animals will be studied through interactive laboratories and experiments. The identification, distribution, effects, and treatments of both native and exotic marine animals will also be discussed, examined and explored.
