...hands-on, feet-wet education
Photographer Jim Clark
The yearly tundra swan and snow goose migration is one of the most magnificent spectacles nature can offer for winter photography. Located on the Atlantic Flyway, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is an important stop for a large number of migratory birds. This time of year is perfect for photographing a variety of bird species as well as the dynamic and breathtaking landscape. This intermediate to advanced workshop will concentrate on the more complex aspects of nature photography. As with the beginners to intermediate workshops, the emphasis is also on personal instruction; however participant will have more time spent in the field and more opportunities for image critiques.
During this workshop, comprehensive field sessions offer great hands-on experience and provide an opportunity to capture stunning photos of natural subjects. Indoor class sessions explore the practical and theoretical aspects of image creation. The daily itinerary is set to provide photographers with maximum photography time, based on wildlife activity, weather conditions and light. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is a photographer's paradise, and the vicinity around Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague National Seashore is phenomenal. The Island is full of wildlife and there are many fabulous places to capture and experience the beauty of pristine marsh lands, coastal forests and trails that lead to panoramic vistas and overlooks.
Note: Photographers are expected to bring their own camera and review their cameras' instruction manuals. Photographers must be able to walk unassisted and able to climb stairs for this particular workshop as the trails around the Refuge are not fully handicap accessible. We will be walking for some parts of the field work, though our pace will be slow. Photographers must be able to stand for 30-60 minutes at a time.
In addition to photographic instruction, this photography workshop includes all meals during your adventures, transportation to all field sites and four nights of double-occupancy lodging at the Marine Science Consortium (inquire for single room enhancement). These and many other features make this a truly enjoyable photo adventure.
Lodging: This brand new, state of the art residential hall with university-style suites and central heat and air is a residential environmental learning center providing educational programs focused on coastal and marine environments. The large lounge area has television and wireless internet access.
Meals: Meals will be a mixture of delicious options. Breakfast will be prepared in the field and ready for us concluding our early morning shoots; so you can enjoy your meal as we finish watching the sunrise. After our morning classroom session lunch will be a nutritious meal served in the Dining Hall of the Marine Science Consortium. We will have dinners out on the Island of Chincoteague. On Chincoteague you'll experience elegant waterside dining offering the finest of seafood, steaks, finger-picking crab feasts, fabulous breakfasts, and savory snacks.
