2012 Summer Session V: August 5 - August 17 Course Descriptions and Information

Read the full descriptions carefully. Some courses have additional requirements, extra costs, or a slightly different schedule.  All courses are full time. Only one course may be taken during a session.  If you intend to enroll in the course, please fill in the intent form for that course. This give you priority but does NOT fully enroll you. You will need to enroll in the course through the offering university and book housing through us. You will hear from the professor on or around February 15, 2012 regarding your registration status.

Course Title: Marine Ichthyology

Course Number: BIOL 396 Credits: 3 semester hours
Course Description:
This is a comprehensive course in ichthyology. Morphology, anatomy, physiology, systematics, behavior, zoogeography, life histories and speciation are among the topics that will be covered in this class. This heavily field-based course focuses on marine fishes using preserved specimens as well as specimens collected from nearby estuaries and the ocean. Field and laboratory techniques include trawling, seining, longlining, dissection, and skeletal preparation.

Prerequisites: 2 semesters of college biology

Notes: This course will be at the MSC campus in VA from Sunday 8/5 – Friday 8/17, with classes in session every day.

Course Title: Marine Ecology
Course Number: 55.260 Credits: 3 semester hours
 Course Description:
A study of the interrelationships among animals, plants and physical and chemical aspects of the environment will be studied, with stress on adaptations for survival that are unique in the marine environment. Students in this course will:
Apply ecological theory to the study of the structure and dynamics of marine ecosystems
Integrate ecological responses across different levels of biological organization to describe adaptations to the environment
Gain experience with ecological field methods and materials
Develop quantitative skills through design and analysis of ecological experiments

Prerequisites: One semester college-level biology.
