Duties

College Summer Volunteers will assist the college program staff in all aspects of the college program from equipment and lab maintenance to managing the college community. Duties of College Summer Volunteers are split into two overarching categories: Resident Life and Programs.

  Resident LifeCreate a welcoming community for all studentsEnforce MSC rules and regulationsDevelop and implement weekend and evening recreation activitiesReport directly to the Resident Coordinator and College Program CoordinatorWork evenings and weekendsPerform administrative tasks

  ProgramsWork on a daily basis with the College Program Coordinator and College Program AssistantGather and maintain equipment for use in college summer coursesMaintain labsRespond to faculty requests for equipment and programsAssist in maintaining aquariaParticipate in ongoing research projects

Desired Qualifications Must have at least junior standing at a member university, just graduated ok Experience leading as well as working with peers Previous experience as a resident advisor valued but not necessary Interest in field station equipment and aquaria Research experience (can be course-related) Ability to make decisions quickly and to work independently Risk management skills Comfortable on boats and in kayaks Must have a valid drivers license Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Terms of Volunteer ServiceCollege Summer Volunteers follow the summer college schedule of 4 3-week sessions.
  May 19- June 8 (Session I)
  June 9 - June 29 (Session II)
  June 30 - July 20 (Session III)
  July 21 - August 8 (Session IV)Two volunteer positions are available during each session. There are a total of 8 positions during summer 2013. (Four sessions of 2 volunteers)Applicants may apply for more than one session.A mandatory orientation session for all volunteers will be held during the weekend of March 16th, 2013. Housing will be provided as a shared room in Salicornia Hall.Meals in the cafeteria will be complementary when programs are in session.For each session volunteered, MSC fees* for one additional session in which a course is attended will be waived.
