School Programs
What if your classroom included acres of pristine salt marsh, windswept coastal dunes, towering maritime forests, intertidal lagoons, and wild ponies?
" I think that your Wallops Island middle and high school program is one of the best things that could happen to educate childen about marine science."
- J.T. Henley Middle School student
Every year, thousands of students and their teachers experience the ecology of a dynamic coastal system through The Marine Science Consortium's school programs.
MSC is ideally located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, between the powerful Atlantic Ocean and ecologically important Chesapeake Bay. The barrier islands of the Eastern Shore create a series of close-by habitats that are biologically diverse and geologically dynamic. These natural classrooms introduce students to a variety of concepts in the biological, chemical, and physical sciences.
Our partnerships with Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Assateague Island National Seashore, and NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility offer exciting outdoor learning and field trip options.
The Coastal Ecology Program
The 3-day Coastal Ecology Program is designed to give secondary, middle, and elementary school students hands-on opportunities to investigate coastal and marine environments. This field experience includes a variety of half day field trips and related evening programs.
